After Utagawa Hiroshige — Shōno: Driving Rain

Artwork Details

About the Work

Based on the composition associated with Utagawa Hiroshige, *Shōno: Driving Rain* is presented here as a later printed edition. Diagonal bands of rain cut across the scene, while figures move through the weather and the surrounding architecture is reduced to crisp, strongly directional forms. The supplied photograph shows the image clearly and supports the identification of the principal subject and orientation. Rather than treating the sheet as a period impression or unique work, the catalogue presents it conservatively as a later decorative reproduction, keeping the visual description separate from questions of authorship, date and edition. The image reflects the Japanese print tradition’s ability to combine narrative clarity with disciplined pattern, contour and negative space.
