About the Work
UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI — NICHIREN IN EXILE ON SADO ISLAND
This decorative print interprets Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s *Nichiren in Exile on Sado Island* through a clean, display-oriented presentation. The narrative centres on a lone historical figure confronting a dramatic natural setting, with strong diagonals and animated surrounding forms amplifying the sense of action. The supplied photograph shows the image clearly and supports the identification of the principal subject and orientation. Rather than treating the sheet as a period impression or unique work, the catalogue presents it conservatively as a later decorative reproduction, keeping the visual description separate from questions of authorship, date and edition. The image reflects the Japanese print tradition’s ability to combine narrative clarity with disciplined pattern, contour and negative space.
