A vast crowd of black-and-white faces fills the floor of the Panthéon’s nave, receding toward a small standing figure beneath the distant architectural opening. The extreme perspective makes the portraits function simultaneously as individual human images and as a continuous patterned surface. JR’s Inside Out project is based on participation and the public circulation of portrait photography, and this composition turns that social archive into a monumental spatial installation. The edition preserves the striking contrast between classical architecture and massed contemporary faces, emphasising scale, collective identity and the way photographic portraiture can temporarily transform civic space.
