About the Work
XU BEIHONG — GALLOPING HORSE
This striking composition after Xu Beihong depicts a single horse captured at the height of an energetic stride. The animal emerges from broad passages of black and grey ink, its raised forelegs, extended hind legs and dramatically sweeping tail conveying an immediate impression of speed, strength and freedom. Fluid washes define the body and musculature, while sharper calligraphic strokes articulate the mane, legs and contours of the head.
The extensive areas of untouched paper surrounding the horse heighten the sense of movement and give the figure a powerful presence within the vertical composition. A calligraphic inscription and red seal at the lower right provide a visual counterpoint to the dynamic form. The work reflects the expressive equine imagery closely associated with Xu Beihong, combining anatomical observation with the economy, spontaneity and gestural energy of traditional Chinese ink painting.
