About the Work
YUE MINJUN — CONTEMPORARY TERRACOTTA WARRIOR
A laughing male figure stands barefoot with both arms raised above his head, the exaggerated expression immediately recalling Yue Minjun’s recurring self-image. The sculpture’s pale shirt and dark trousers keep the palette restrained, directing attention toward the open mouth, closed eyes and theatrical gesture. By adapting the pose and stance of monumental figurative sculpture to his familiar grinning character, the work combines humour with a degree of unease. The figure’s scale and isolated presentation heighten its caricatural quality, transforming the repeated smile into a compact three-dimensional emblem of the artist’s satirical pictorial language.
