About the Work
YUSUKE HANAI — FACING THE CURRENT
A small boat carries two simplified figures across an oval field of blue that reads as water. One figure sits at the rear while the other, pale and almost featureless, occupies the centre, creating a restrained narrative of companionship or passage. The boat’s wood-toned finish contrasts with the soft blue base and muted clothing, lending the scene a calm, handcrafted appearance. Hanai’s figures frequently combine rounded cartoon forms with a reflective, slightly nostalgic mood. This sculptural multiple translates that sensibility into a compact vignette whose quiet body language leaves the relationship and destination deliberately open to interpretation.
