About the Work
ZENG FANZHI — MASK SERIES – PRINT
A frontal male figure in a suit occupies the centre of a vivid blue field, surrounded along the lower edge by an abundant mass of brightly coloured flowers. The face has the exaggerated, mask-like tension associated with Zeng Fanzhi’s figurative vocabulary, while a thin line or airborne object extends toward the upper right. The contrast between formal clothing, floral abundance and open blue ground creates a deliberately theatrical image. Rather than functioning as straightforward portraiture, the work uses distortion and staged symbolism to suggest psychological pressure, social performance and the unstable identity of the painted subject.
