About the Work
YOSHITOMO NARA — MARCHING ON A BUTTERBUR LEAF
A small girl occupies the centre of the sheet, standing on an oversized brown leaf while holding a slender stem or twig. Her simplified body, blunt fringe and sideways gaze are immediately characteristic of Nara’s child figures, in which apparent innocence is complicated by emotional distance and self-possession. The generous white ground isolates the figure and gives the image an understated, almost private atmosphere. Soft earthy colours contrast with the sharp graphic economy of the face. The work demonstrates Nara’s ability to invest a seemingly simple illustrated scene with narrative ambiguity and psychological presence.
