About the Work
TOMOO GOKITA — UNTITLED PORTRAIT – PRINT
A cropped female head is rendered in a restricted black, white and grey palette. Heavy dark hair frames the face, while the eyes are obscured by a broad white band and the mouth opens into a simplified black shape. The image combines the smoothness of fashion photography with deliberate erasure and distortion, producing an uncanny portrait that resists individual identification. Gokita’s practice is known for monochrome figurative imagery drawn from vintage illustration, advertising and anonymous photographic sources. Here the tension between recognisable human features and graphic interruption gives the composition its psychological charge.
