About the Work

YUE MINJUN — LAUGHING MAN – PRINT

The entire image is filled with repeated laughing male heads rendered in pink and red tones, with a single darker figure near the centre interrupting the otherwise continuous field. Yue Minjun’s exaggerated grin is multiplied until it becomes pattern, turning an expression usually associated with pleasure into something insistent and potentially unsettling. The absence of background compresses the heads into a crowded surface, while differences in scale and orientation maintain movement. This repetition is central to the artist’s satirical language, in which the smiling self-image can function as mask, caricature and commentary on collective behaviour.
