JOSÉ PARLÁ — EXILE AND THE KINGDOM, 2019
A broad horizontal field is built from layered gestural marks, scratches and transfers in white, blue, rust, ochre and black. Dense passages accumulate toward the centre, while other areas remain comparatively open, creating the impression of an urban surface repeatedly written over and weathered. Parlá’s calligraphic vocabulary draws on graffiti, memory and the textures of city walls, and this edition preserves that sense of physical accumulation through hand-finished impasto, powdered paint, drawing and mono-transfer elements. The unique interventions ensure that the printed structure retains the energy of an original surface rather than reading as a purely mechanical reproduction.
