About the Work

JAMES JEAN — MAZE – PRINT

A young female figure in a yellow skirt walks across a pale green, mist-like ground while interacting with a large circular maze or labyrinth form. The character is shown in profile and rendered with delicate line, leaving much of the surrounding paper open. Soft washes and restrained colour create a dreamlike atmosphere quite different from the dense imagery of Jean’s more elaborate compositions. The maze motif introduces an implied narrative of navigation, uncertainty or discovery, while the figure’s small scale reinforces a sense of vulnerability. The work combines illustration, fantasy and symbolic space with notable visual economy.
