About the Work
XU BING — SQUARE WORD CALLIGRAPHY – PRINT
The vertical sheet is filled with dense black calligraphic characters arranged in columns on a warm, pale ground. At first glance the work recalls traditional Chinese writing, but the structure relates to Xu Bing’s ongoing investigations into language, translation and visual legibility. The tightly packed signs create a strong overall texture while encouraging the viewer to move between reading and looking. Slight variations in scale and spacing prevent the composition from becoming mechanically uniform. As an edition, the piece preserves the authority and rhythm of calligraphy while simultaneously calling attention to the cultural conventions through which written marks acquire meaning.
