About the Work
KAWS — COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH), BROWN, 2013
Companion (Passing Through) presents KAWS’s familiar Companion in an unusually introspective pose, seated with both gloved hands covering its face. The brown body is paired with pale gloves and the artist’s characteristic crossed-out eyes, although the expression is largely hidden by the gesture. This posture transforms a cartoon-derived character into an image of embarrassment, grief or withdrawal, adding psychological ambiguity to the clean manufactured form. Produced as a limited cast-vinyl multiple, the work is a representative example of KAWS’s ability to move between contemporary sculpture, graphic culture and collectible design without losing the recognisability of his character vocabulary.
