About the Work
JAVIER CALLEJA — UP TO YOU, 2020
The work resembles a torn page from a lined notebook, featuring one of Calleja’s large-headed characters with pale hair and a single prominent green eye. Handwritten red text reading UP TO YOU runs vertically beside the figure, while smaller sketches and marks occupy the margins. The deliberately informal presentation preserves the atmosphere of a spontaneous studio drawing despite its editioned format. Calleja’s characteristic mixture of vulnerability, humour and oversized facial features is clearly present. The combination of ruled paper, marginal doodles and direct text creates intimacy, as though the viewer has encountered a private note rather than a conventional autonomous artwork.
