About the Work
SHEPARD FAIREY — OBEY GIANT – ICON
A stark black-and-white face fills the upper portion of the image, framed by a heavy rectangular border and paired with the word OBEY in a red block below. The highly simplified facial features derive from Shepard Fairey’s long-running Andre/Obey iconography and retain the visual force of a propaganda poster. Strong bilateral symmetry, flat colour and bold typography make the composition immediately legible from a distance. The print demonstrates Fairey’s use of advertising and political-graphic strategies, turning a repeated street-art emblem into an image that questions authority, persuasion and the circulation of visual symbols.
