About the Work
JAVIER CALLEJA — NO ART HERE
A wide-eyed child stands with one arm extended, holding a placard that reads NO ART HERE. The figure’s oversized head, asymmetrical eyes and gently modelled features are characteristic of Calleja’s deliberately innocent visual language, while the sign introduces a self-aware joke about the status of the object itself. A red cap and pale blue shirt provide simple blocks of colour against the neutral body. The sculpture plays with the relationship between fine art and collectible culture: its toy-like accessibility is paired with an ironic text that draws attention to questions of authorship, display and what viewers choose to recognise as art.
