About the Work
TAKASHI MURAKAMI — MR. DOB – PRINT
A cropped Mr. DOB face dominates the sheet, its enormous circular ears, single central eye and wide grin arranged across a red-and-white field. Small multicoloured details within the eyes and mouth intensify the polished, cartoon-derived surface. Murakami’s DOB character developed from a mixture of Japanese animation, corporate mascots and art-historical self-branding, and the image demonstrates how readily that vocabulary moves between painting, print and merchandise. The tight crop gives the composition a confrontational immediacy, while the crisp outlines and flat colour retain the immaculate graphic finish associated with the artist’s Superflat production.
