About the Work
HEBRU BRANTLEY — FLYBOY BLACK & GOLD, 2017
The Black & Gold Flyboy shows Hebru Brantley’s goggled child hero seated astride a stylised rocket, rendered in a predominantly black finish with metallic gold accents. The dark palette gives the figure a more graphic and streamlined presence than brighter variants, while the rocket’s pointed body and flame motif reinforce themes of flight and aspiration. Flyboy is central to Brantley’s character universe and draws on heroic imagery, comic culture and the history of Black representation. Produced as a painted cast-vinyl multiple, the work translates those ideas into an accessible sculptural format closely connected to streetwear and collectible design.
