About the Work
VHILS — SCRATCHING THE SURFACE, 2014
The photograph-like architectural image shows the exposed side wall of an urban building, its pale façade bearing a large distressed portrait or intervention. Windows, roof structures and surrounding industrial elements remain visible, situating the image firmly within a specific built environment rather than isolating the artwork as a studio object. Vhils is known for working directly into walls and surfaces, removing material to reveal portraits through excavation. In lithographic form, the piece records that relationship between image and architecture. Weathering, negative space and urban context are therefore not incidental details but central components of the composition’s visual language.
