About the Work
CAI GUO-QIANG — GUNPOWDER DRAWING – EDITION PRINT
A diffuse black and grey cloud spreads across an otherwise pale field, with granular edges, smoky passages and darker concentrations suggesting residue from an explosive or powder-based process. The composition is largely abstract, yet the irregular dispersal retains a strong sense of physical event. Cai Guo-Qiang’s practice is internationally associated with the controlled use of gunpowder, where combustion, chance and drawing intersect. In edition form, this imagery retains the visual memory of blast, smoke and dust. The broad empty areas are as important as the dark marks, allowing the energetic central form to appear suspended and still expanding.
