About the Work

AI WEIWEI — MIDDLE FINGER IN RED

Set against an intense red ground, the image is organised as a loose circular constellation of outlined arms and raised middle fingers. The deliberately provocative gesture is repeated until it becomes both symbol and pattern, while the thin pale lines contrast sharply with the saturated field. The composition relates to Ai Weiwei’s broader use of direct gestures and recognisable signs to question authority, convention and systems of power. In this graphic format, an act normally associated with individual defiance is multiplied into a rhythmic, almost decorative arrangement, creating tension between visual elegance and confrontational content.
