About the Work
KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI — THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA
Based on the composition associated with Katsushika Hokusai, *The Great Wave off Kanagawa* is presented here as a later printed edition. Water becomes the principal graphic force, articulated through curling crests and rhythmic bands that contrast with the distant stability of Mount Fuji and the shoreline. The supplied photograph shows the image clearly and supports the identification of the principal subject and orientation. Rather than treating the sheet as a period impression or unique work, the catalogue presents it conservatively as a later decorative reproduction, keeping the visual description separate from questions of authorship, date and edition. The image reflects the Japanese print tradition’s ability to combine narrative clarity with disciplined pattern, contour and negative space.
