About the Work
GARY BASEMAN — TOBY
A wide-grinning character stands with arms extended horizontally, wearing a red-and-black costume topped by a tall cap. Large oval eyes, exposed teeth and a clock-like motif on the torso give the figure a theatrical, slightly uncanny presence. Baseman’s characters often combine cartoon accessibility with darker psychological undertones, and this sculptural multiple captures that balance effectively. The symmetrical pose and strong colour blocking make the silhouette immediately legible, while the exaggerated smile prevents the work from becoming simply decorative. As a designer figure, it translates the artist’s illustrative universe into a physical object intended to be viewed from all sides.
