About the Work
MICHAEL LAU — GARDENER – COLLECTIBLE FIGURE
A stylised male figure with a square head points assertively to one side. He wears checked trousers, trainers and dark accessories, while tattoos or printed marks animate the exposed torso and face. The exaggerated proportions, streetwear styling and articulated toy-like construction correspond to Michael Lau’s pioneering approach to urban vinyl and character sculpture. Rather than idealising the body, the work emphasises attitude, clothing and subcultural identity. Its stance suggests an arrested moment of conversation or direction, turning a small collectible into a compact character study rooted in Hong Kong street culture and the visual language of designer toys.
