About the Work
KAWS — CHUM (BLACK)
The CHUM figure is rendered entirely in glossy black, with inflated segmented limbs that recall the construction of a vintage advertising mascot. KAWS replaces any conventional facial expression with his crossed-out eyes and simplified head, creating an anonymous but immediately recognisable character. Because colour is withheld, reflected light becomes especially important in defining the rounded body and articulated joints. The work demonstrates KAWS’s transformation of mass-media forms into sculptural multiples that circulate between art and collectible design. Its broad stance and compact proportions give the figure a strong physical presence despite the deliberately minimal surface treatment.
